Myth or Fact? Leaving your PC screen switched on over lunch doesn’t waste much energy.

That’s a question we commonly get asked.
Well, there is some thruth to the fact that once electrical equipment is operating at its designed ambient temperature it is operating optimally. Maintaining the working temperature also puts less stress on the myriad of electrical components that make up the device. Also a steady ambient room temperature will reduce thermal stress at startup and shutdown. This will impact the PC and Screen’s usefull life and help to prolong it due to lower possibility of component failure over its lifetime.
International Energy Agency (IEA) reports poor performance on climate change.

With 2010 GHG Emissions hitting an all-time high, our fight against climate change appears doomed unless we act swiftly.
Shocking figures released by the IEA yesterday (May 30) show that carbon dioxide emissions in 2010 were the highest on record according to their estimates.
After a two year lull due to the recent poor economic conditions globally estimated emissions rose to a record 30.6 Gigatonnes (Gt) – up 5% from the previous record set in 2008.
Taken on a per capita basis, OECD countries collectively emitted 10 tonnes, compared with 5.8 tonnes for China, and 1.5 tonnes in India.

If you already have an automated shutdown system in place…
Posted by EnergyWatchIT in Uncategorized on January 20, 2011
Many organisations already have in-house shutdown systems for their PCs. These systems are useful for ensuring that all PCs get switched off at the end of the day.
However most of these systems merely consist of a kill signal that is sent to all PCs at the same time each day. These systems are quite basic, for example there is usually no option to postpone the shutdown (if you are working late) and if a PC user is working late and has any docs open, they lose all their work if they don’t save before the kill signal kicks in.

Renewables on the rise
Posted by EnergyWatchIT in Uncategorized on December 14, 2010

The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) released a report today highlighting trends in emissions and use of environmental resources in Ireland. Download the report here.
The good news is that renewable energy is on the rise, with wind power expected to account for two-fifths of power generation by 2020. However the report points out that after 2020 coal use may increase. Have we not got the policies in place to make sure we don’t go back to old habits after we’ve met our 2020 targets? Ireland is changing her diet for energy sources. We must make sure we keep moving in the right direction.
