Myth or Fact? Leaving your PC screen switched on over lunch doesn’t waste much energy.

That’s a question we commonly get asked.

Well, there is some thruth to the fact that once electrical equipment is operating at its designed ambient temperature it is operating optimally. Maintaining the working temperature also puts less stress on the myriad of electrical components that make up the device. Also a steady ambient room temperature will reduce thermal stress at startup and shutdown. This will impact the PC and Screen’s usefull life and help to prolong it due to lower possibility of component failure over its lifetime.

If you already have an automated shutdown system in place…

Many organisations already have in-house shutdown systems for their PCs. These systems are useful for ensuring that all PCs get switched off at the end of the day.

However most of these systems merely consist of a kill signal that is sent to all PCs at the same time each day. These systems are quite basic, for example there is usually no option to postpone the shutdown (if you are working late) and if a PC user is working late and has any docs open, they lose all their work if they don’t save before the kill signal kicks in.

Renewables on the rise

The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) released a report today highlighting trends in emissions and use of environmental resources in Ireland. Download the report here.

The good news is that renewable energy is on the rise, with wind power expected to account for two-fifths of power generation by 2020. However the report points out that after 2020 coal use may increase. Have we not got the policies in place to make sure we don’t go back to old habits after we’ve met our 2020 targets? Ireland is changing her diet for energy sources. We must make sure we keep moving in the right direction.
